RUNCORN
A TOWN NOT SO NEW
by H.F.
STARKEY
To many people Runcorn is a New Town but it is also an ancient one. Its history goes back to a third century Roman settlement on Halton Brow and it was mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for 914.
However this book concerns the town’s recent history.
It is a pictorial record of a town which has undergone profound change.
The archive photographs recall forgotten vistas as well as traditional customs and practices of times past together with vanished industries, rural landscapes and buildings which may now be beyond the memories of even the oldest
Runcornians.
H.F.
( Bert) Starkey
has written numerous books on the towns history and his latest book aims to present different aspects of life by using photographs
which have never been seen before. It is hoped that this book will bring back memories for old
Runcornians and that it will introduce younger Runcorn folk and newcomers to the town’s interesting
story.
The book is priced at £16.00 inc. p&p in UK
