Our wonderful Portuguese neighbours are the Lopes family. Jorge, Eugenie and their son Helder.

They know the casa inside out and of course the area has been their home for most of their lives, however their English is still a work in progress, but they will make you welcome and can contact us at any time.

The nearest “real” village is Sao Estevao , some 2 miles away. It is a small traditional Portuguese village with essential facilities like shops, café and restaurant, pharmacy and social club. It is also the location of the local “council” offices where you can use free internet, buy stamps, mobile phone credit, photocopy and receive / send mail.

There are sandy beaches nearby (15-20 min.), in Fuseta and Barrill, and excellent golf courses as well. The area is perfect for walking. Recommended places to visit at only a 20 minutes drive include the charming town of Tavira with its castle ruins and the large fishing port of Olhão.

The Coastline of the Eastern Algarve is all about the protected nature reserve, the Ria Formosa. This is a lagoon running east from Faro to Monte Rota. The most stunning beaches on this part of the coast are offshore and access to them is by various boats or water taxis or "little train". The closest beach, 15 minutes away by car, is Fuzeta. Fuzeta is a small town with bars and cafes and restaurants and a clean sandy beach. Fuzeta has an onshore beach and offshore beaches accessed by various shuttle boats.

Barril is only 20 mins  by car, with a lovely 10 min walk to the beach, or if you are feeling a little lazy, a miniature passenger railway at just E1.50. Barril has a wonderful beach with breaking waves as well as some fine cafes , restaurants and some small shops.

Spain is just 40 mins away by car with little or no border formalities, so the area is also ideal as a base for exploring on both sides of the border. For example, Seville is only 90 mins away.

We’d also recommend the longest zipline in the Iberian peninsular at Alcoutim ( right on the Rio Guardiana….which forms the border with Spain.) About 40 minutes away it is the only zipline in the world that crosses between two countries. The ride was E 15.00  in 2014 and includes the short river crossing from Portugal to Spain to take your ride. There are no border controls. You need to book in advance (local numbers is 0034 670 31 39 33 or  info@limitezero.com . ) The owner and head man is English and REMEMBER  that your appointment time is 1 hour AHEAD of Portuguese time!!!

Because of this time difference the operators brag, with tongue in cheek, that it is the FASTEST zipline in the world…as when you return to Portugal in after your 2 minute “flight” , you have GAINED an hour !!!
